Oral and maxillofacial surgeons hold a rare double qualification as both dentists and medical doctors. 

They have highest level of skills and qualifications for procedures such as impacted teeth, dental implants, corrective jaw surgery, oral cancer, salivary gland disease and jaw joint (TMJ) disorders.

They can also treat a broad range of conditions affecting the head and neck including craniofacial disorders, face trauma and head and neck cancer.



It takes a minimum 15 years of training to become an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.


After acquiring medical and dental degrees, oral and maxillofacial surgeons complete basic surgical training then 4 years full time speciality surgical training in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Once an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon completes their training, they get the letters FRACDS (OMS).

FRACDS stands for Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons.

The Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons is the only regulatory body which trains oral and maxillofacial surgeons in Australia. They are recognised by the Australian Prudential Health Regulation Authority (AHPRA), Australian Medical Council, Australian Dental Association, Medicare, Australian health funds, and private hospitals.

OMS stands for Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon.
